“ You have to have confidence in your vision – or else no one else will trust in it. ”
— Mary Katrantzou
Print as Architecture, Not Decorator
Some designers use prints as surface,Mary Katrantzou treats them as structure.
Her work helps me understood something crucial ; print can function like a cut, like drape, like form itself. It doesn’t sit on the garments — it builds it. Much like architecture: where illusion, perspective, and proportion decide how a space is experienced_her designs manipulate the eye before they ever touch the body.
Perhaps that is where it all begin — with her architectural training. Space, after all is never neutral; It directs movement, attention, and emotion. Katrantzou translates that logic onto fabric, turning dresses into visual experience rather than objects.

The Beginning: Digital Meets Hand
From the start, her work existed between two universes — digital precision and traditional craftsmanship. What intrigues me the most is how deliberately she refuses to choose one over the other.
Her prints feel hyper-real and almost surreal, yet they are grounded in technique. Technology does not replace the hand- it amplifies it, This balance creates tension — realism collapsing into illusions, impossible made wearable.
That idea stayed within me: “technology as a tool for emotion, not efficiency”.
Reworking the Familiar_ Adidas Originals (2014–2015)
When Katrantzou collaborated with Adidas Originals; she didn’t soften her language to fit sportswear catalougue — she distorted it.
Sneaker soles curved around the body – Shoelaces became contour lines. Technical mesh, neoprene, leather, and suede were contoured beyond function into fantasy. The familiar was still visible, but altered —like perceiving known elements through an innovative lens.
That approach resonates deeply with how I think about inspiration, “You don’t erase the source_ You bend it until it speaks differently”.

“Inclusion Without Dilution”: Marina Rinaldi (SS 2019)
Working with Marina Rinaldi, Katrantzou entered the space of ‘size-inclusive‘ fashion with enhance touch of her own vocabulary. Silk and stretch jersey carried kaleidoscopic prints; the Shadow-effect dresses played with depth and illusion across bodies of different proportions.
What mattered here was not adaptation — but respect;
The language stayed intact_The canvas expanded.
That idea to be noted here ; inclusion does not require simplification.

Elements & Memory: Autumn–Winter 2019

Her ‘10th anniversary’ collection drew from classical
elements, — earth, wind, fire & water — expressed through rich fabrics, embroidery, beading, sequins, feathers, knits and lace. It felt archival yet forward- ceremonial yet wearable.
This collection felt like reflection, A designer looking back not bounded with nostalgia but — acknowledging evolution rather than freezing it.

“Wisdom begins in wonder”
That phrase alone could carry a collection;
Victorian references appeared in embroidery and ornamentation. Tulle, silk, organza and lace created volume without heaviness. Yet beneath the beauty was intention _ the collection helped raise funds for children with cancer.
Here, craft, concept, and care aligned,
A reminder that elegance does not have to be empty.
Expansion Beyond Garments
Her work extends beyond fashion : into collaborations with Bulgari as Creative Director of Leather Goods & Accessories, where fine leather & gemstones transform the Serpenti into a garden like mythology. Even here, the storytelling remains central.

To delve deeper into Mary Katrantzou’s innovative spirit and expansive creative vision, here are some additional collaborations that merit thorough examination and widespread recognition within the fashion and design communities.

What I Take From This;
Mary Katrantzou’s work doesn’t inspire me to imitate her prints, but it teaches me something quieter and more lasting:
“to trust vision before validation”.
To let illusion coexist with structure,
To allow influence without dilution &
To build worlds – not just objects.
Her work reminds me that confidence is not loud, It is precise.
